How do STD's cause infertility?

A woman's anatomy makes her more vulnerable to the two STDs most likely to result in infertility, gonorrhea and chlamydia. They OFTEN SHOW NO SYMPTOMS and if untreated, about 15% of women will develop pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

PID creates inflammation and scarring of the fallopian tubes making it hard for sperm and eggs to find each other thus preventing pregnancy. This damage can also hinder the fallopian tubes’ ability to transport the ovum for fertilization within the tubes and implanting it in the uterus, ultimately elevating the risk of ectopic pregnancy.

Gonorrhea and chlamydia can also lead to inflammation of the cervix and urethra in the lower part of the urinary tract.

In men, untreated chlamydia - the most common sexually transmitted disease in the US and UK - infects the urethra and may spread to the epididymis, the tube that carries sperm from the testicles, causing dramatic genetic damage in sperm, leading to MALE INFERTILITY.

pain during sex

bleeding after sex

pain when urinating

unusual vaginal discharge

bleeding between period
